Dr. Paul Hill
Minister of Worship Arts

Dr. Paul Hill has been a church musician for 45 years and is a third generation Baptist minister. He is married to Janet and they have two adult children, Zach and Rosemary (and a Dachschund named Lucy and Smokey the cat).

Dr. Hill's studies in music education include a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), a Bachelor of Music (BM),  and his studies and experiences in church music along with his seminary degree, Master of Church Music (MCM), have helped shape how he defines himself as a “Church Music Educator” serving as a minister in the local church.  As a result of his doctorate, Dr. Hill designed a curriculum primarily to assist other church musicians in teaching their choir members how to improve their music literacy skills called “The Basic Music Reading Skills Course.”

He has been the Minister of Worship Arts at First Baptist Church, Marietta, Georgia, since 1999 having previously served churches in Florida, Alabama, and earlier in Georgia.  This November Paul celebrates 25 years in his position at First Baptist Church.

Paul is also the Founding Conductor/Music Director of the community orchestra, “Marietta Pops Orchestra” (formerly “Symphony on the Square”). This orchestra traces its roots to First Baptist Church where all rehearsals are held and the musical equipment of First Baptist Church is shared with Marietta Pops as well as hosting their annual Holiday Concert. Formed in 2010, Marietta Pops is a 501c3 registered performing organization and is grateful for the relationship they have with First Baptist Church Marietta.

According to his wife he has way too many hobbies including bass fishing, fly-fishing, cooking, target shooting, (yard work…well, sorta) computing, graphics design, handy-man carpentry, woodcarving, herb gardening, woodturning and many others. What he enjoys the most is making music and being with his family.

Paul recently announced his retirement, effective December 8, 2024 after serving 25 years in this incredible church and 45 years in church music. It has been a fulfilling journey and Paul and his wife are looking forward to the next chapters in their lives. This year’s Carols By Candlelight, our 25th here, will be his last concert but his community orchestra (Marietta Pops Orchestra) will continue with an exciting new concert concept planned for the spring of 2025 involving area churches. Here is a copy of Paul’s retirement letter.

Sanctuary Pipe Organ
Musicians:
Mr. Ron Carter, Mrs. Judy Jones, Mr. David Cotey, Mrs. Vicki Frey

First Baptist Church Marietta is unique among many churches today by having a pipe organ in its sanctuary. Since its installation in 1962 and shortly after the completion of the sanctuary, First Baptist Church Marietta installed and continues to maintain a 46 rank, 3 manual Reuter Pipe Organ with 2443 pipes and 53 stops.

Our church is also blessed by having capable individuals who can support and accompany the hymn singing of our worship with this beautiful instrument as it serves alongside the other musicians in our First Orchestra and the Worship Choir as together they support the largest choir in our church: our congregation.
